Free California GATE Practice Tests by Grade

GATE means Gifted and Talented Education. California does not administer one statewide GATE test. Local school districts set their own identification policies and may use ability or achievement tests together with classroom performance, recommendations, observations or portfolios.

There is no single California GATE testing grade because each district sets its own screening and referral schedule. Elementary school is the most common period for GATE screening, with Grades 2 and 3 frequently used for universal screening; some districts test earlier or accept referrals in Grades 4–6 and beyond. Check your district’s GATE page or ask the school’s GATE coordinator for the exact local grade and schedule.

California districts choose their own GATE identification measures. Depending on the district, students may take the CogAT, NNAT, OLSAT or another ability or achievement assessment. Districts may also consider teacher or parent recommendations, classroom observations, student work and other evidence. There is no single statewide list of California GATE questions because districts select different assessments. Common gifted screeners use question types such as pattern completion, figure matrices, analogies, classifications, sequences, spatial reasoning, number relationships and verbal reasoning. First ask the school for the exact assessment name, grade level and testing format because California GATE procedures vary by district. Begin untimed, review the reasoning behind mistakes and add gentle pacing only after the directions feel familiar.

California has no statewide GATE qualifying score. Each school district sets its own criteria and may combine test scores with other measures. Use the score report and eligibility rules published by your district, and contact its GATE coordinator if the cutoff or appeal process is unclear.
